ABOUT
Meet Dr. Allison McCarter, Ph.D., CEDS
Credentials:
Certified Eating Disorder Specialist
Gottman Level 1 and Level 2 trained
Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas
Provisionally Licensed Psychologist in Texas
I graduated with a degree in Psychology and Corporate Communication from Baylor University (Sic ‘Em) and my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Texas Woman’s University. I attained my Ph.D. from the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program at Texas Woman’s University, and completed my pre-doctoral clinical internship at the APA-accredited Oklahoma Health Consortium!
For me, it is important that research informs my practice which is one of the reasons why I pursued my doctorate. I successfully defended my dissertation titled “Examining the Moderating Effects of Subclinical Religious Intrusive Thoughts on Religious Centrality and Self-compassion Among Christian Women” to explore how religion, religious intrusive thoughts, and self-compassion intersect. I am passionate about utilizing evidence-based treatments with clients while emphasizing empowerment and ensuring a client’s individual needs and context are being taken into consideration.
My past clinical training includes an intensive outpatient program, college counseling centers, a residential eating disorder unit, a Christian private practice, and a trauma-informed private practice. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, OCD, scrupulosity, perfectionism, and life transitions. I am also a certified eating disorder specialist which is a designation through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. This certification requires at least 2 years to complete, 2500 supervised practice hours, case studies, the completion of 4 intensive courses, certification exam, as well as continuing education in eating disorders.
I believe therapy is a safe space to grow and be challenged. Therapy provides room for clients to implement changes and give and receive feedback. I consider it an honor to walk alongside clients as they navigate different areas of life. Whether you are seeking healing or personal growth, I am dedicated to fostering an honest, supportive, and welcoming environment that lends to positive development and the attainment of your personal goals.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling with my husband, Blake, reading, and being outdoors with my dogs, Ellie and Maui. I love spending time with family and friends, coffee, finding the next best travel deal especially if it includes the beach!
*Effective September 19th, 2024 I am working as a Provisionally Licensed Psychologist (#40379) supervised by Irais Anderton Chavez, Ph.D (#38796).
